With the exception of very tiny and extremely specialist sites, all the major search engines make money mainly through paid advertising on the results pages. The advertising on these sites has two major characteristics.
Firstly, it is contextual. People using the search engines are not shown random adverts. The specific adverts they see at any given moment, are driven by the specific search terms they are using. Secondly, the vast majority of the advertising on the site is of the pay-per-click, or PPC variety. In this way, the advertisers do not pay until the users have clicked on their ads, invariable redirecting the users to the advertisers’ sites.
