What does getting indexed mean?
Getting indexed means that Google knows about your page, has it indexed and shows it when users search for terms contained in your page.
This post covers just how to get google to come visit your site and index you. It does not discuss getting good positioning in google.
Here are the 5 best ways I’ve found to get indexed quickly (btw at the end i have a few notes on things to keep in mind as far as indexing is concerned) -
- By far, the quickest is to buy an existing indexed domain/website (preferably aged i.e. pre 2000, although a few years old will do). Then you just start adding on to that domain/website. Note: A website with a bunch of indexed pages is preferable to a domain with just a single ‘This website Coming Soon’ page. Time taken: usually 1 or 2 days.
- The second quickest way is to get a few links (although sometimes one will do) from existing indexed, regularly crawled websites. Do not pay for these (or if you must, do not pay much). A link that’ll help you get indexed is not a big deal (even though in your rush it might seem like a big deal. Time taken: a few days. sometimes over a week.
- [from this point on are methods that I've either not used at all or very infrequently] Getting into a directory. Personally, i think this is a workable although not ideal way to get indexed. The more trusted the directory the better. However, very few trusted directories accept new websites with a handful of pages.
- Submitting to google or yahoo via the Submit URL option - I’ve seen very erratic results here. I can safely say that its not as good as the above 3 - although I have had a few websites work out.
- [Not my personal opinion] Getting into Yahoo directory for yahoo, dmoz for google, and doing Adsense or the Yahoo equivalent. There are people who swear by these methods - however, i’ve not tried this to get indexed so try it for yourself.
A few quick notes - the more of the following factors about your page, the higher the chance that when seach engine spiders visit, they’ll consider your page valuable and index it -
- A page that the sider can actually crawl. Spiders get thrown off by invalid html, flash, javascript, tables, etc. So try to have a crawlable website.
- Unique Content.
- The fewer ads the better. Exception: Adsense (provided it isn’t overdone).
- Good choice of urls, titles, etc.
- Good navigation i.e. the pages in your website are easily crawlable by spiders (and easily reachable by users).
